Unable to endure alleged harassment from his senior, Thimme Gowda, a 42-year-old head constable attached to Gangammanagudi police station, attempted suicide by consuming pesticide in the station premises on Wednesday. He was immediately rushed to K C General Hospital by colleagues and is stated to be out of danger.

Gowda has alleged that inspector S B Chabbi's constant pestering is the reason he took the extreme step. Gowda said that he hadu00a0 recently undergone a knee operation and was unable to walk long distances. He had asked Chabbi to assign him a stationed beat, but the inspector allegedly used to make him walk for about 10 kms everyday. Besides, Gowda added that Chabbi used to give him memos over trivial things and treated him like a criminal. Gowda's sonu00a0 anjunath said that he'll soon report the matter to senior officials.

'It's false, baseless'

Refuting the allegations, Chabbi said the claims were false and baseless. "I wasn't even present at the station when he attempted suicide. There is another head constable who suffered a paralytic stroke. On humanitarian grounds, I assigned him a particular beat. Gowda was upset with that and was insisting for the same," said Chabbi.

He added, "We are all upset with Gowda's behaviour. He abuses me and other cops in the station. Imagine a head constable abusing an inspector. Irritated with his behaviour, I have not spoken to him since the past six months, so where's the point of me harassing him. The policemen have even recorded his abuses, some of which are really filthy. Besides, he had hit a sub-inspector."

Chabbi said that if Gowda thinks he is being harassed, he should have complained about it to the senior officials. A senior police official, on condition of anonymity, said that Gowda, during his stint in Peenya and Vidhana Soudha police station, behaved the same way. He had hit a head constable in the Peenya police station and had attempted to hit a sub-inspector at the Vidhana Soudha police station. Meanwhile, a case ofattempting suicide will be registered against Gowda and an enquiry will be initiated against Chabbi on the harassment allegations, said a senior officer.
