Actor Ambarish reportedly did not want to be a part of the Opposition's ongoing padayatra because the Congress decided that those attending the rally would stick to vegetarian food.

The film star turned politician is known for his love for non-vegetarian fare and alcohol. Not terribly excited with the idea of keeping off vegetarian food, he chose to remain home and enjoying the Sunday with close friends.

MiD DAY overheard Congress Leader Siddaramiah discuss the 'special' padayatra menu with actor Ambarish who also asked if there would be liquor.

MiD DAY witnessed a telephonic conversation between Siddaramiah, leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, who is spearheading the march from Bangalore to Bellary against illegal mining, and Ambarish two days before the padayatra.

"We know about your favourite food. I will ensure that naati koli saaru (gravy made of country chicken), booti (diced pieces of mutton), and tale maamsa (head mutton) along with mudde (raagi ball) are served in the rally.

I request you not to miss the rally. You are a popular star, your presence is very important," he added.

"When the menu is so tempting how can I miss it?" said Ambarish. "Use your clout to include theerta (liquor)," he added jokingly.

As luck would have it, Siddaramiah was unable tou00a0keep his promise, thanks to a party diktat that restricted the menu to raagi mudde (raagi ball), rice and rasam.

Not surprisingly, the man of principles that Ambarish is, he remained absent when the rally that is to culminate in Bellary on August 9 began yesterday.

Ambarish did not pick the phone when MiD DAY called on his mobile. "Ambarish preferred to stay back as he wanted to spend quality time with his friends and family members as it is a Sunday.

He is perfectly fine but his weight makes it a little difficult for him to walk that long," said a man who merely identified himself as Ambarish's friend.
