Toonpur Ka Superhero Kireet Khurana says his film will bring back animation

The Indian animation scene seems set to witness a major shake-up with Kireet Khurana's Toonpur Ka Superhero.

But can this film revive, and firmly establish, Bollywood's moribund animation film genre? Khurana is optimistic. The filmmaker has a strong animation gene (his father, Bhimsain, won 16 National Awards in animation besides crafting the perennial childhood favourite Ek Anek Ektaau00a0-- Ek Chidiya Anek Chidiya). He says, "Toonpur is a combination of 3D animation and live action, a unique concept for India."

Of course, animation too needed star muscle, so star couple Ajay Devgn and Kajol were roped in. The debutant director says, "It was a humongous challenge for them to react to non-existent characters since we were shooting against green screen. But what they have done is amazing. The fact that we are releasing with Farah Khan's Tees Maar Khan reflects Ajay's confidence."

Remind Khurana that recent animation films have bombed at the box office, and he says, "Though the quality of animation in Roadside Romeo was excellent, it didn't work because the story didn't appeal to the audience. The USP of my film is the story."

In this one, Ajay plays a film star named Aditya, while Kajol plays his wife, Priya. Ajay has garnered money and fame but his children are not happy with him because they want their father to be a real hero, not a plastic reel hero. Ajay goes travels to the crust of the earth where two groups of toons are fighting.

In India, animation films are largely aimed at children. But Khurana hopes, Toonpur will break barriers and engage adult viewers too. Bollywood News Service
