The Mumbai-based official was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe
An Income Tax official and a chartered accountant were arrested in Mumbai on Thursday for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh in return of a favourable order. The accused have been identified as IT officer Ranjan Prakash, who works at Parel-based Piramal Chamber, and chartered accountant Vimal Patinjia.
According to CBI officials, the action was taken on a complaint that Ranjan had demanded Rs 1.5 lakh through Vimal, to give a favourable order in a pending case.

CBI officials then laid a trap and caught the CA red-handed while accepting the bribe. "The accused was arrested and we recovered Rs 24.39 lakh (approximately) from his residential and office premises," said a CBI statement.
"A case was registered against the duo under charges of criminal conspiracy and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 and they were sent to judicial custody. The agency had been trying to catch them ever since they received the complaint, said CBI.
"We are probing the matter further to ascertain if they are involved in such cases earlier too. We have a strong case and we are investigating it further," said a CBI official.
Recently, an IRS officer was also apprehended by CBI. Income-Tax Commissioner of Agra, Homi Rajvansh, was apprehended for issuing a loan worth over Rs 160 crore to four business houses of Delhi, without seeking sureties, during his stint as additional managing director (AMD), National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED), from July 2003 to 2007.
