A Supreme Court judge yesterday expressed displeasure over the growing trend among the media to conduct sting operations which, he felt, virtually convicted individuals in the eyes of the public even before they were brought to judicial trial.
"Tomorrow, it could be one of us (judges) also," Justice G S Singhvi, one of the three-member bench, observed while hearing the appeal filed by senior defence counsel R K Anand, convicted by the Delhi High Court in the BMW sting operation case.
Justice Singhvi said that it was time for everyone to ponder as both the print and electronic media had started using tactics resulting in violation of an individual's right and liberty.
"In your case (Anand) public conviction was already there," he observed.
Senior counsel Aftab Ahmed appearing for Anand submitted that the media had not even spared the Parliament from such sting operations.
