However, the 47-year-old Singh spelled out his name to two bike-borne youth for the last time in his life on Wednesday morning. A prominent businessman of his locality in Narela in outer Delhi, Singh had walked out his house for the daily morning walk near Narela police lines when two unidentified people stopped him at a relatively secluded place and asked his name.
The moment he introduced himself, the two assailants took out pistols and shot at him from close range. They fired more than ten rounds. Six bullets caught Singh in the chest while three making their way into his head.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but he succumbed to his wounds on the way.
"It seems like a case of personal rivalry. We have registered an FIR under section 302 of IPC in the Narela police station and have launched a manhunt," said Chhaya Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer Delhi).
However, relatives of Singh claimed that his business rivals had ordered the shootout. "He was a very successful property dealer and his success bought him rivals. It seems like someone hired contract killers to kill Jasbir which is apparent by the way assailants went about their job," said Jaspal Singh, a relative of the deceased.
Residents of the area have also expressed shock, as a number of them woke up to sounds of gunshots. "This is a rare case, we have tackled so many murder cases in the area but we haven't seen such desperate murderers. They left nothing to chance," said a police officer.
The police are also questioning some history sheeters of the area. The body of the deceased has been sent for post mortem.
