A recent investigation by east Delhi police revealed that three Nigerians who were staying at semi-posh Arjun Nagar without verification were paying five times the normal rent for a small flat. They used to dupe people by sending fraud lottery emails and to pose as genuine tourists, used to buy expensive shoes, clothes, merchandise and accessories. Police has recovered articles worth more than Rs 10 lakh from their residence.

The accused have been identified as Smart Adoghe, Godfrey Omoaghe and Iyobasa Isibor. They had been staying at the flat with fake identity cards and passport. By paying hefty amounts they were also able to get mobile connections without verification.

According to the police, they have duped around 150 people across India amounting to Rs 1.5 crore. "The trio on arrival downloaded Nigerian passports and pasted their photographs to get rented accommodation on fake identity. They also got SIM cards and opened bank accounts using fake documents," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) K C Dwivedi.

The gang was operating from various parts of Delhi and had a perfect set-up for different jobs to be performed at different stages to cheat the person. The gang had groups who used to help in networking by sending mails, getting telephone connection with ISD facility, use to open bank accounts and withdraw money from different ATMs of the country. On the instance of cheating one victim for Rs 8 lakh, the gang changed their mobile numbers to trap another Internet user.

The arrests came into light following a complaint filed by Ramesh Chand Jaiswal who is a resident of Mayur Vihar. The police are still trying to investigate the complete network and are in the process to nab other accomplice.
