Shocked R T Nagar residents gathered around the house of a 71-year-old IISc professor who was found murdered along with his family yesterday.

While Puroshottam Lal Sachdev was found in his room, strangled with a veil, his wife Rita, 62, and physically disabled son Munna, 35, were found strangled with a cable wire.u00a0

Additional commissioner of police M R Poojar said a property dispute could have prompted the crime since there were no valuables missing and the couple had had a good offer for the house.

The couple, originally from Punjab, had settled down in Bangalore 30 years ago. They had adopted a 23-year-oldu00a0 called Anurag alias Happy a few years back.

Police suspect the involvement of Anurag, a PUC dropout and drug addict, who went missing since Friday. They picked him up for questioning when he returned home yesterday.

They also suspect a servant who has been missing since Friday.

Stumbling on crime

The incident came to light when Rita's relatives phoned her. When there was no response, they asked an acquaintance, Rajiv Diwan, to go to their house and check.

Diwan found the door locked from the inside. Suspecting something fishy, Diwan informed the police who rushed to the spot and broke open the door to find the three bodies.

Some neighbours said Sachdev had returned home on Friday after visiting IISc. They also saw him on Saturday night in front of his house but not after that. Experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory said the murder could have taken place 18 hours back.
