If you are visiting Modi Garden, chances are you will be greeted by a bunch of strays even before you spot any resident in the area.

With residents alleging that the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has been releasing these dogs seen around this residential plot, the number of dogs here has gone up drastically in the past two months.

Residents claim that despite several complaints about the menace, the BBMP has done nothing. "Earlier, there were very few stray dogs but for the last two months the numbers have increased.

People are scared to come out of their houses, especially during night, as pack of dogs roam around the streets.

This is because the BBMP's dog squad comes and releases these dogs after the birth control operation is done near the 6th cross, which has a large open space.

The other side of our area is an open space," said S Shashidhar, secretary, Modi Garden Residents' Welfare Association.

The people are scared to come out of their houses especially during night, as pack of dogs roam the streets.
"Until now there has been no case of dog bite, but it may happen any time.

The BBMP officials have to act immediately and round them up before some untoward incidents occur," said S Balaji.

The residents say that whenever they have complained to the BBMP officials, their response is "their ears are cut" which is an indication that they are sterilised, so there is no chance of breeding.

But they are not bothered about increasing number and the threat to the residents.

A BBMP official said, "We are aware that the dog squad releases them in nearby areas after sterilisation, to make their jobs easy. This is a persistent problem."

BBMP Environment Engineer Kiran said, "I agree that the number of dogs have increased in Modi Garden.

But this has happened because we are not supposed to kill them, as per the rules. I will inform the concerned officer to pick them up as soon as possible."

DJ Halli Corporator R Sampath Raj told MiD DAY, "I met BBMP's animal husbandry director yesterday, and have discussed this problem in our ward. There are more than 200 dogs in our ward and most of them are sick."

He added, "I request the public not to throw food and waste on the road and near garbage bins. I will take up the issue with the commissioner about the dog squad letting stray dogs in my ward."
