The cash crunch can't crush Jai Bhim comrades' spirit. Thousands of followers of Dr BR Ambedkar have descended on Shivaji Park from across the country to commemorate his 61st death anniversary tomorrow. According to many, instead of the expected fall in numbers in the wake of demonetisation, the number of disciples turning up to pay homage has increased this year.
Ankush Gaekwad, from Chalisgaon in Jalgaon district, explained that the prevalent cash crunch in the country pales in comparison with followers' 'excitement' over visiting Chaityabhoomi, the memorial to the Dalit icon at Shivaji Park. "One cannot miss this event because of financial constraints. We queued up early in the morning in our village to come here."
Rajesh Gaekwad, also from Chalisgaon, said he saved up the whole year for his Mumbai visit. "I have been saving every rupee. Our entire year is planned around this visit."
The visitors gave a thumbs up to amenities like toilets and drinking water provided to them.
Mahadev Giri, inspector in the police control unit at the venue, said over 2,000 people rested inside Shivaji Park yesterday and the number of visitors has been steadily growing.
