tables at the entrance are cleared to make way for a kebab grill. The coals were red hot when we arrived, with tikka skewers lined up, all ready to be grilled.
Ayaz's appeared a month ago in place of a crepe station. The restaurant manager says customers wanted something to munch on while sipping on juice, and the grill's been a crowd puller ever since they opened.
The menu sticks to the regular tikka, kebab and roll routine, with a handful of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options to choose from. The food is priced at a reasonable Rs 50 (non-veg) and Rs 35 to Rs 40 (veg). Ayaz's doesn't win too many points on the presentation, though: the food is served on flimsy paper plates, with sliced onion and chatni on one side. But once you get started, the presentation is the last thing on your mind.
We tried: The Chicken Reshmi Tikka with white masala, Chicken Reshmi Roll and Chicken Tikka Roll. The rolls came wrapped in a healthy wheat roti, stuffed with grilled chicken, that took us back to Mohammed Ali Road's famous sigdis. The tikkas were grilled to a crispy perfect finish and the masalas were far from overpowering.
The vegetarian menu was not as satisfying though, with Baby Corn Tikkas served cold. The Mushroom Tikkas lacked flavour too. Go for the Paneer Tikka with roasted capsicum and onion.
Ayaz's is a contrast to the upscale juice bar it works out of, with a quick-fix, no-frills approach. For those who would rather pack-and-go, you will have to arrive early to place your order, since the grill gets busy later in the evening.
