PT Bhimsen Joshi, 87, was admitted to the ICU of Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital on Karve Road in Pune on Wednesday following complaints of breathlessness and vomiting.
He was undergoing a routine health check-up after having undergone a Maningioma (brain tumour) surgery in the same hospital when doctors noticed his unease.
Musicians and fans have been requesting prayers via constant Twitter updates for the Bharat Ratna recipient since then.
Multiple organ failure including repeated urinary infection and kidney problems in addition to ailments related to the upper respiratory tract and intestines are ailing him. He has been provided with dialysis to prevent any further complications.u00a0u00a0
"He is on a ventilator and requires periodic dialysis. He is critical, but there has been no further deterioration in his health in the past 12 hours," Atul Joshi, his consulting physician said.
Shrinivas Joshi, son and disciple of Joshi confirmed the news. The family is hopeful that he will respond to medicine and treatment.
Pandit Joshi will turn 88 in February. Inquiries are being made in large numbers regarding his condition by fans and well-wishers. Sahyadri Hospital has been providing constant information on the condition of the musical maestro. "We are taking all precautions in the ICU where Bhimsenji has been kept," said Atul Joshi. "We are also updating the media every 24 hours."
