Forest officials struggle to understand why the BBMP is forcing them to attend special sessions on something as 'trivial' as saving sparrows
The BBMP babu brigade is walking the extra mile to ensure the sparrows return to Bangalore. Worried about the city's falling sparrow population, 25 senior officials recently approached Nasik-based activist Mohammed Dilawar for advice. A BBMP circular orders officers to learn from Dilawar, who is widely known as 'sparrow man'.
Dilawar has argued that a good sparrow population in a city signifies, among other things, that the urban environment is safe for humans to inhabit. A falling sparrow population on the other hand denotes that pollution levels have risen dangerously in an urban space.

In yet another move in the direction of sparrow conservation, officials of range forest officer rank and above have been summoned for special 'sparrow sessions' that will be held by Dilawar from July 9. Officials have been warned that they would face disciplinary action if they fail to attend.
"It's not about tiger conservation or anything major. Why did they have to issue a circular for something as minor as saving sparrows? They have asked us to attend sessions where we will learn something as trivial as saving sparrows," confirmed a forest official.
Dilawar will conduct his special sessions on sparrow conservation at the BBMP headquarters that will include interaction with forest officials on the subject.
"Yes, we have invited him," said NL Shantha Kumar, conservator of Forests, BBMP. "We are doing this as sparrows are disappearing from the city. They require our immediate attention."
"We need to understand a few basic things about sparrows," added Shanth Kumar. "Dilawar is an expert, and he will help us create a habitat that will support sparrows in the city.
We are renovating our lakes and stepping up our efforts to conserve our environment. The sparrow sessions are yet another step in the direction."
Wildlife experts in city are looking forward to attending Dilawar's sessions.u00a0u00a0 "We will participate in the efforts," said Sharath Babu R, environment advisor, BBMP, and wildlife expert.

"The initiative is aimed at addressing the sparrow issue. I am excited to know what other steps we can take to bring the sparrows back."
