Rules are meant to be broken. If you believe in this axiom, then you are certainly living in another world. The city's traffic cops, armed with Blackberry mobile phones, are out on the streets to lay their hands upon habitual traffic offenders.

Well, you read it right. Now, cops can simply enter the licence number of the offending vehicle in their Blackberry phones which, in turn, will connect them to a backend server. The cops can then obtain details of previous offences, if any.

The pilot project, on which the department plans to spend a whopping Rs 50 lakh, was started a week ago. Five traffic police officials, equipped with the expensive Blackberry phones, have been asked to move across the city to check the viability of the gadget in catching habitual traffic offenders.

DCP Manoj Patil, said, "It's an ambitious project by the traffic police department. We have forwarded the proposal to the state government and are waiting for approval." API Sunil Pandharkar of Chatush-rungi, who has been using the Blackberry phone said, "Itu00a0 helps us ascertain whether the vehicle used by the offender is stolen or not."

Pandharkar added that the cops even carry a handy printer along with the mobile phone so that they can print the fine receipts immediately.
