An abandoned bag near Dorabjee on Moledina Road triggered a bomb scare around 5 pm yesterday, causing a major traffic jam.
As panic spread in the area, nearby stores were evacuated and shoppers and store workers asked to leave the premises.
A stall owner said the police arrived about 30 minutes after the discovery of the bag and had to first tackle the crowd wanting to get a glimpse of the parcel.
"We didn't find any bomb. It was just waste papers stuffed in a carton," said Inspector Vitthal. "Senior police officials were present at the spot. We have sent the bag for further examination."
After 75 minutes of traffic jam on the street opposite SGS mall, the police were able to restore a semblance of order in the area.
