A 24-year-old labourer was injured in a collapse of a four-storeyed building, which was under repair inu00a0 Alandi yesterday. Ajay Sharma was working on the fourth floor of the building, where some construction activity was taking place, when the structure came crashing downu00a0 The building, which was lying unused for four years, belonged to a local Vijay Muralidhar Tapkir, who was taken into custody by Vishrantwadi police after the incident. He is booked under IPC 336, 337,334 for endangering life and safety and foru00a0 negligence.u00a0
u00a0When MiD DAY contacted Alandi Muncipal Council Chief Officer Pandit Anand Vanjeri, he said, "The pillars at the base of the building were constructed too far apart. Tapkir had installed a water storage tank of 35,000 litres capacity on the terrace andu00a0 had also constructed an overhead verandah on the top floor without prior permission or planning. The verandah connected the neighbouring buildings, which also belonged to Tapkir. The structure was too weak, it couldn't take the load and collapsed like pack of cards."

Madhav Pahatangade, a fireman at Sant Tukaram Nagar fire station said, "We received a call at 8.27 am. A fire engine was sent to the spot.u00a0 Sharma was buried in the debris. He had minor injuries when he was rescued." Sharma was discharged after treatment.
