Youth replaces diamond ring with one of lower quality at jewellery storeAn unidentified young man allegedly stole a diamond ring from the jewellery store P N Gadgil on Laxmi Road by replacing it with one of inferior quality. CCTV footage has revealed that the youth stole the diamond ring from the display tray on the afternoon of June 24.
The CCTV footage has been handed over to the Vishrambaug police and a sketch of the suspect has been prepared on the basis of the footage and description given by a salesman at the store. Prashant Suresh Pavtekar (39), a resident of Katraj and employed with the P N Gadgil jewellers, has lodged an FIR. The suspect has been booked under section 420 of the Indian Penal Code.
Pavtekar told MiD DAY that the suspect spoke only in English and dressed stylishly. "There was not much rush at the store that day. A man who looked like an Iranian came near the diamond counter and asked me to show some rings. He took a ring from the tray and tried on his fingers.
Later on, when we took stock of the items and saw the CCTV footage, we realised that the suspect with sleight of hand had replaced the original ring with a low quality one." An official from the Vishrambaug police station said, "The display tray had 20 diamond rings. The original ring was 20 g while the duplicate weighed 15 g and was of lower quality."
