Security has been tightened in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district following a call from Pakistan threatening to carry out terror strikes in the region, police said on Tuesday.

"The caller from Pakistan told a cloth merchant, Raj Kumar, on his mobile phone that after Mumbai, now Saharanpur would witness a series of terror attacks very soon," district police chief Amit Chandra said.

The caller first dialled Kumar's mobile phone February 22 but rang off before the cloth merchant could pick it up, the official said. Raj Kumar lives in Behat area of Saharanpur.

"Later, when Kumar called the mobile number with Pakistan's country code 92 as the prefix, the man on the other side said devastating terror attacks would be carried out in Saharanpur," Chandra said.

Following the threatening call, officials of the intelligence department and the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) have been put on a high alert, police said.

"Additional security has been deployed at all public places, including railway stations, shopping complexes, bus stations and hotels," Chandra said.

The police have initiated a joint probe with ATS and intelligence officials. "We are not going to take any chances," the official added.
