In order to prevent incidents of racial discrimination against the people from the North East, the ministry of Home Affairs has directed all the states and Union Territories to book offenders under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Under the law, offenders can end up spending five years in jail.
