purchased for nearly Rs 85 lakh. After the purchase, she started getting it renovated. But the society members told her to stop work, claiming she was destroying the walls of the house.
"The building is 40 years old. In 2005, we passed a unanimous resolution that no structural changes, including demolition or tampering with walls, be made or the person responsible would be fined Rs 50,000. We sent her a letter, but she did not heed to it," said Anthony Fernandes, secretary of the society.
The society sent her another letter stating she stop the work, as there was leakage in the flat below. She replied to the society that she found no leakage. Another member, J Menezes, said, "After Bor-ivli's Laxmi Chhaya collapsed, we don't carry out any structural changes. What she [Gracias] is doing is illegal and dangerous too."
When MiD DAY contacted Gracias, she said, "I do not want to comment on the issue."
