The arrest of a chain-snatching gang has once again confirmed that criminals don't give up even when jailed.

The gang of six, arrested while hatching a robbery near Jayanagar T Block, led the police to their leader Sirajuddin alias Siraj, a convicted criminal in central prison.

Tilak Nagar police, led by inspector Srinidhi, caught Abdul Jabbar, 26, Dhananjaya, 19, Munikempa, 24, Ramesh, 20, Puttaraju, 20, and Rajshekhar, 26, and recovered gold chains weighing 305 grams, a Pulsar motorcycle and lethal weapons from them.

After questioning the gang members, the police took 25-year-old Siraj into custody from the prison under a "body warrant' and later sent him back after interrogation. All seven have been booked for eight chain-snatching cases.

Interrogations revealed that the accused were on a mugging spree in the city after Siraj called Abdul Jabbar asking him to arrange money for his expenses in jail. Jabbar told the police that they had already handed over a few gold chains to Siraj on the pretext of visiting him.

When Siraj was taken into custody, he confessed that he had already sold the booty to one Ansar, who took it from him by visiting the jail and later sold it and gave him the cash. "Siraj said he used the money to buy cigarettes and other luxuries which are available in the jail, and we are investigating how he used the money and his mobile phone from jail," deputy commissioner of police B N S Reddy told MiD DAY.

According to police, Siraj is a habitual offender involved in several chain-snatching and bike-theft cases, and was convicted after Chandra Layout police arrested him a few months back. His associate Jabbar,u00a0 however, had managed to escape at the time.
