The state police arrested Madoor Yousuf alias Madoor Isubu (36), a notorious rowdy and close aid of underworld don Chota Shakeel on Wednesday. DG and IGP Dr Ajai Kumar Singh said that Yousuf is involved in more than 17 criminal cases since the year 2001, including four murders, attempt to murder, hurting, rioting and extortion.

Notorious: Madoor Yousuf alias Madoor Isubu is involved in more than
17 criminal cases since the year 2001, including four murders, attempt
to murder, hurting, rioting and extortion

Yousuf has been on the wanted list of Dakshina Kannada District police since 2003, when he jumped bail in a communal rioting case with Ullala police station of DK. He had escaped to Saudi Arabia from where he began his operations using local associates in Mangalore.

The DGP said that on receiving credible information about the movement of Yousuf, the police team from Dakshin Kannada district was on the lookout for him. "On Wednesday, we received definite information that Yousuf is to visit Yeshwanthpur railway station in Bangalore to meet his old associate. The police team laid a well-planned trap and nabbed him," said Singh.

Madoor Yousuf has been involved in a number of criminal cases. He was involved in a case of hurt and rioting in Ullal, Mangalore in which he was sentenced to three years imprisonment, but was acquitted later.

Between 2001 and 2003 he was involved in this case of attempt to murder and two cases of hurt and rioting of communal nature. Later in November 2003 he along with his associates, killed Narasimha Shettigar, an auto rickshaw driver in Ullal.

After establishing himself as a criminal, he started an extortion business since July 2009. The technique was to identify rich businessmen in and around Mangalore, make threat calls to them and if they did not heed, direct violent action against the targets through his local henchmen, many of whom were arrested.

In this line, three cases of extortion and two cases of attempt of murder were registered against him between July 2009 and March 2010, the DGP.

Naxal connection
The Yousuf and Shakeel link has also been linked to the underworld trying to develop contacts with Naxal elements in India, particularly in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, Ajai Kumar Singh revealed.

In August this year, the city police had nabbed Devaiah and Vinay, who made contact with Chota Shakeel through another criminal element in Dubai, posing as naxalites. They received Rs 25 lakh from Shakeel for an operation and were supposed to meet Shakeel at Dubai.

"They were arrested before making a trip to Dubai. Yousuf has now admitted in his initial interrogation that he had introduced Altaf to Shakeel after Shakeel made the request," DGP added.

He said that Yousuf's arrest is a major breakthrough for the state police. "His interrogation is also likely to give us further insight into the functioning of communal organisation in Karnataka and their links," he added. Yousuf was produced before the JMFC Bantwal yesterday.
