To clean up its act, Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) is now outsourcing the process of sanitisation of all its buses. The tendering process of this project is over, and a five-year contract has been awarded to Moriya Industries. The total budget of this project is around Rs 4.5 crore.

"It was necessary to improve the quality of maintenance and cleanliness of the buses. So we have outsourced this service. As part of this venture, leading-edge machines for washing the vehicles from the outside and latest cleaning equipment would be mounted at all our 10 depots. The company will be providing 10 workers for doing this job at each depot and they will work in shifts," said PMPML chief engineer Sunil Burse.

"All buses inside a depot would be cleaned daily, and each bus would be washed in a four-day rotation under this project. Rs 17 for cleaning and Rs 82 for washing every bus from the outside would be paid to the company by PMPML. Also, we will charge the contractors Rs 300 for cleaning and washing of each bus running on contract basis with PMPML," he added.

Currently, there are around 3,000 PMPML buses in the fleet, which are generally grimy. Jitendra Bhagwat, a regular commuter, said, "The PMPML buses are in terrible condition. Travelling by such filthy buses can adversely effect peoples health."
