On Wednesday night, an already ailing Thackeray suffering from a respiratory illness, took a turn for the worse, forcing doctors to put him on life support. One of the five doctors stationed at Matoshree told MiD DAY, "Balasaheb's health is very critical and he has been put on life support. All his organs except for his heart have stopped functioning. Only his heart is contracting."

Thackeray's condition continued to remain critical on Thursday. Dr Jalil Parkar, one of the doctors treating Balasaheb said, "His condition is critical. I cannot comment on any further details."

Even as rumours kept swirling about Thackeray's health, former MLA and senior leader Gajanan Kirtikar said, "Balasaheb is breathing normally and he's fine."

Family members and other supporters continued to remain optimistic and said that Thackeray's condition had improved and he was getting better.

"We appeal to all to remain calm and pray for him. We are grateful for the prayers and support of millions of Thackeray's admirers and supporters all over India," said senior party leader Subhash Desai.

Sources at Matoshree told MiD DAY that the condition at the bungalow was very tense and the entire family including elder son Jaidev and nephew Raj were present. The source also added that Uddhav was very worried but was still welcoming guests. "Uddhav Saheb is tense, he's tired.

However, he's still speaking and welcoming the guests coming to see Balasaheb," said an MLA from inside Matoshree.u00a0
