A Police constable who tried to intervene when he saw a group of three people consuming alcohol openly on Wednesday night was attacked by them with a broken beer bottle. The police arrested one of the accused, but the others managed to escape. According to the Kothrud Police, Constable Nilesh Vinayak Gurav was attacked late in the night by Amol Gaikwad (24), Mahadev Lokhande and Rohit Sonavane. Gaikwad was the one who was arrested, while Lokhande and Sonavane were absconding.
Gurav sustained injuries on his elbow and shoulder and was taken to hospital. According to Gurav's complaint, the incident took place when he was on night patrolling duty along with Constable M D Shaikh. Gurav said at 11.30 pm they spotted a Tavera car parked near a dumping ground at the corner of Shastri Nagar road.
"As we approached the Shastri Nagar road near the dumping ground, we saw a Tavera car parked and we could here loud music emanating from the vehicle. We saw three people consuming alcohol and making a lot of noise. When we asked them to stop drinking and making noise, Gaikwad broke a bottle and came charging towards me, trying to stab me in the stomach," Gurav said. "I immediately stepped back, but he managed to get me on my hand."
Senior Police Inspector Chandrakaant Ghodke from the Kothrud police station, who is the investigating officer in the case, said, "We are looking for the two other suspects in the case." The three have been booked under IPC Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 307 (attempt to murder) and 506 (criminal intimidation).
