Police arrested Sarfaraz Nawaz and said he had funded the blasts

Police arrested Sarfaraz Nawaz of Kalasipalyam today and charged him with funding the July 2008 bomb blasts in Bangalore.

Nawaz spent Rs 3.2 lakh on the terror project, police commissioner Shankar Bidari told the media today.

u00a0"He spent it on the logistics and buying the material," Bidari said.

Nawaz has been a member of Simi since 1997, and police said he had worked as its secretary in Delhi.

Police maintained he was caught in Kalasipalyam, in the heart of Bangalore, but MiD DAY had reported last week that he had been secretly brought in from Muscat by Indian sleuths.

Nawaz was reportedly close to Naseer Riyaz and Abdul Sattar, who allegedly planned the blasts. They are now said to be hiding in Bangladesh.

Several low intensity blasts went off in Bangalore on July 25, and one of them killed a woman.
