In what could be termed as a major lapse in security on the Republic Day eve, the city cops detained Mangesh Rudra and one Deshmukh for behaving suspiciously and then let them free without even making an entry in their diary.
Serious slip
R S Shinde, the sub-inspector of Dattawadi police chowky, where the incident too place, agreed that it was a serious slip and said that the matter needs to be investigated.
"The only thing I know is that the duo were taken for interrogation by two policemen after around 8 pm on January 25," he recalled.
He added that it was actually a routine check of those who were living on rent in various housing societies across the area.
However, Shinde said that two men from Central Investigation Department (CID) met him on Republic Day at around noon.

Questioned
"They asked me why the duo were let off to which I pleaded innocence as I was not on duty and there were no diary entries," he said.
The duo was allegedly staying in a flat in K-building of the Aditya Nakoda Enclave no 2 on Sinhagad Road.
Sunil Bhor, the secretary of the society confirmed that two men in police uniform had taken them for interrogation.
According to a police sleuth, those who were detained were running a sex racket in the city. Also, he suspects that Rudra might be a Bangladeshi with an alias.
