Three cases have been registered in southwest Delhi's Chhawla area in connection with alleged chopping off of women's braids by unidentified people, police said. These incidents come in the wake of nearly three dozen similar reports from Rajasthan and Har­ya­na in the past few weeks.

Police said they have procur­ed CCTV footage in which three men could be seen roaming in the area. "The victims alleged that when the incidents took place, they inside their homes , which were locked from inside. None of them saw any suspicious person," police said. It is suspected that the accused administered a sedative so that the victims were unable to offer any resistance.

No witchcraft angle
DCP Surender Kumar confirmed that photos of the three accused spotted in CCTV footage have been circulated across police stations. "Prima facie, it appears a notorious gang is behind such cases as some residents have also complained of robberies. The accused have been booked under the Arms Act. There is no witchcraft angle in the case. We are verifying the allegations of women. We have sent some samples for forensic examination," he said.

Curious Delhi case
One woman, Munish, said as she was near her home around 7 pm, when she fell unconscious. When she regained consciousness, she found her braid had been cut. "But, her daughter, 6, who was accompanying her, did not see any person near her," the police officer said.
