The Pune Anti-Terrorism Cell (PATC) and the Crime Branch raided two locations in Pimpri and Kondhwa and arrested seven persons on charges of betting during the India-South Africa cricket match on Sunday.
The suspects arrested from Pimpri are identified as Paras Jain (64), a resident of Guruwar Peth, Mukesh Rameshwar Agarwal (35) of Kundan Nagar in Dapodi, Sanjay Ishwarlal Mittal (39) from Mohan Nagar in Chinchwad, Ram Govardhanmal Bajaj (37) and Gopa Vasudev Israni (42), both from Pimpri. An accomplice Kesu Badlani is absconding. Two other suspects identified as Sunil Rajkumar Makhija (32) from Kondhwa and Subhash Deepchand Tekwani (47) from Bhavani Peth were arrested from Kondhwa.
Police Inspector Sunil Tambe of PATC and Inspector Sunil Pawar of Unit IV from the Crime Branch conducted the simultaneous raids yesterday.
Seven mobiles and a television set were recovered in the Pimpri raid from the five suspects, while 12 mobile phones, a laptop and a television set were recovered from the raid in Kondhwa.
Modus operandiThe suspects used mobile handsets as a means of communication to have bets placed on the India-South Africa match. The suspects also had a TV set and laptop in their possession during the betting.
The police said further investigation of the contacts list in the mobile phones and laptop recovered from the suspects would reveal more information.
