Bone of contention: Abhinav Tyagi's nomination was cancelled |
University (DTU) waned, the students' activism has got a fresh lease of life.
The nomination of a third year student, who had filed his nomination for Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections, has been cancelled. Now the students are planning to move court.
The election commission refused to accept the nomination fee citing the reason that the aspirant can't contest elections because DTU Vice-Chancellor Prof P B Sharma had written a letter saying no student of the institution can go for the elections as they have not appointed any faculty to look after the students.
Abhinav Tyagi, the candidate said: "I filed my nomination for DUSU elections. It was formally accepted by the DU authority, which was signed by Prof G L Verma, Dean Academics DTU. But later my nomination fee was not accepted. Even after the conversion, existing students are a part of DU and are entitled to exercise their right to vote."
"We are suffering but fighting against them is very tough. It's a clear case of government pressure on the election commission not to accept the form, as it will highlight the issue of DCE-DTU once again. However we haven't lost hope and are lplanning to take up the matter in Delhi High Court," Tyagi added.
As per the DU Act, any student on the rolls of the University and a member of the students' union can contest elections. Last year, an RTI application regarding holding of polls in DCE revealed how DTU authorityies flouted all the rules. Students were not allowed to exercise their right to vote in DUSU elections even though electronic voting machines were sent to DCE.
DTU Vice-Chancellor, Prof P B Sharma was not available for comments.
Meanwhile, DU released the final list of students contesting the DUSU elections. Gurmeet Singh, DU's Chief Election Officer, said a total of 190 students, including 53 for president and 47 for vice- president, had filed nomination papers on Tuesday, but after withdrawal by many and disqualification of some, 41 remain in the fray.
"Out of this 11 are for President, 10 for Secretary, and 9 each for Vice-President and Joint Secretary," he said.
The NSUI and ABVP announced their candidates for the September 3 DUSU elections. Harish Choudhary, a student of SGBT Khalsa College, is NSUI's candidate for the post of President while Jitender Choudhary of MA (Buddhist Studies) will be his rival from ABVP.
For the post of Vice- President A A Vardhan Choudhary of NSUI will be in direct contest with ABVP's Priya Dabas.
Out of the race Last year, a seven candidates were disqualified from the Delhi University Students' Union polls. Just two days before the polls, the election office served show-cause notices to six candidates contesting central panel posts for using printed material and posters in their campaign. Nearly 30,500 of the total around 88,000 students voted in the polls. About 750 electronic voting machines (EVM) were used for polls at 50 centres.
