A woman who was earlier admitted to Dalvi Hospital for delivery was shifted to Sassoon Hospital in critical condition after complications developed in the advanced stage of her pregnancy.
According to patient's mother the last- moment decision was taken after it was found that the operation theatre of the private hospital was non-functional. A doctor claimed it was shut for fumigation.
The woman, a resident of Shivajinagar slum area was admitted to Dalvi Hospital on Sunday morning as she had labour pains.
"When we reached the hospital they admitted her and then took her to the labour room, but after some time doctors called me and said there was a complication. They also said that it is difficult to save the child and the mother.
They took my consent to shift my daughter to Sassoon Hospital as C-section could not be done there according to them," said the patient's mother.
She added, "As doctors told us to shift my daughter to Sassoon, I told them that I was alone and needed an ambulance." The patient gave birth to a boy with normal delivery.
Somnath Pardeshi, medical officer of health, said, "The mother and child need an Intensive Care Unit post-delivery in such a situation so the patient was shifted to Sassoon Hospital."
A doctor from Sassoon Hospital said that they had seen several such cases in the past. A senior doctor from the family planning department said, "As we are a tertiary hospital many hospitals refer critical cases here."u00a0
