Swank new SUVs to replace old police gypsies patrolling Capital
The old police gypsies and Qualis cars will soon be a thing of the past in the posh colonies of the national capital. The old police vans have been shifted to the "underprivileged" areas of outer Delhi and have been replaced by brand new SUVs.u00a0 The Delhi Police have procured 100 brand new Chevrolet Tavera cars to patrol the city streets where the city's super rich put up.
According to a senior police official, the Home Ministry had sanctioned 130 Tavera cars for the Delhi Police of which 100 have already been delivered.
All new police vans have been put on Police Control Room duty. Senior police officials said that getting these new SUVs was part of the key preparations to upgrade the security apparatus in the city ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
The new cars have been modified to suit patrol duties as police control room vehicles according to the suggestions given by senior police officials.
"We have put the cars in and around the heart of the city. They are functioning as the PCR vans. The old
cars have been sent to border areas like Sultanpuri. The new cars are deployed in the main areas of the city like Connaught place, Jantar mantar and near the Prime Ministers residence. All the cars will be used only as Police Control Room vans," said a senior police official.
BK Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Provision and Logistics) said, "All the 100 new Taveras are being used as PCR vans only. Another 30 will be arriving shortly."
