Danger of biggest ever floods in Delhi with Haryana releasing nearly six lakh cusecs of water

Keep your head above the water this evening. With Haryana releasing nearly six lakh cusecs in the Yamuna and the incessant rains continuing, the threat of floods loom large.

The Met department has already predicted that the rain spells would continue at least till September 13.
The total impact is likely to be felt by Friday when the six lakh cusecs of water from the Tajewala barrage reach Delhi, but the YAmuna is expected to breach the danger mark by this evening.

"The water level is 204.12 at present and is expected to touch the danger mark of 204.83 metres by 6:20pm on Thursday, We are prepared to deal with the situation," said an official.u00a0

Haryana Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary (irrigation) SS Dhillon said in Chandigarh the Delhi government had been informed.

The top brass in the city is expected to discuss the crisis in a high level meeting. However, red alert has already been sounded along the riverbank in Delhi. Around two weeks back when Haryana had released around 3 lakh cusecs, the water had reached Ring Road, ISBT and several other areas.

"Yamuna floods will not be that devastating. But if it rains in the city then the administration might have to face a big problem," said a senior Delhi government official.

Sources in the CWG Organising Committee said, so far there has not been any flood alert sounded by the city administration. The surrounding areas of Games Village are already waterlogged, and there are fears that if the water level rises further, the problems could escalate. The government has approached the army to pump out the water from the area to prevent breeding of mosquitoes.
