Delhi gangrape case: Proceedings against Ram Singh abated

V K Anand, counsel for Ram Singh, told reporters, March 13 outside the courtroom that "since the accused is dead and the court has also been informed about his death, the proceedings against him are abated".

Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna was informed that Ram Singh "hanged himself to death" in his cell in Tihar Jail March 11 and a detailed status report was awaited.

Ram Singh was the driver of the bus in which the 23-year-old woman was gangraped by six males, including him.

The in-camera proceedings against other four accused continued in the court and the prosecution witnesses recorded their statement. The fifth accused is a juvenile whose case is being heard by the Juvenile Justice Board.

The court recorded the statement of two forensic experts, who had provided their scientific support and services during the investigation of the gang-rape case.

B K Mophapatra, senior scientific officer, and Rajender Singh, a principal scientific officer-cum-assistant chemical examiner, both from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory, were cross-examined by defence counsel.

The court summoned Thursday an employee of Safdarjung Hospital where the victim was initially treated before her death in a Singapore hospital.

Rashmi Ahuja had initially prepared medico legal case of the victim describing the wounds and injuries caused to her during the crime.

The fast-track court is recording the statements of the prosecution witnesses on a daily basis.
