Delhi hospital extends help to girl with giant head syndrome

18-month-old Roona Begum, who is living with her parents in a remote village in the northeastern state, is suffering from Hyderocephalus - a condition in which the head swells due to accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in brain.u00a0

Her poor parents are unable to get her treated for the disease as it entailed high-end surgical intervention apart from high treatment cost.

To her relief, leading private healthcare provider Fortis group today offered help in "examining" the child and said they would try to bring the girl here for further check-up.

"We are trying to get the girl here. Line of treatment can be decided only after clinical and other examinations. We would do the best we can for her," said a spokesperson of Fortis.

Dr Sandeep Vaishya, senior neurosurgeon with the Fortis, said Hydrocephalus is condition identified with blockade of fluids passage of the brain, which led to its accumulation in the brain and the head size keeps on increasing. He said to treat such patients, a diversion is created where a tube is put in the cavity (head region) and other end of the tube is connected with the abdomen, which help in drainage.
