KL Sehgal, a 75-year-old retired bank manager loves to go for long walks, but it remained a dream for many years. For Sehgal was suffering from urinary problems because of an enlarging prostrate gland for 10 years. And incredibly when it was removed in two phases on June 7 and June 10, it weighed 424 gm.

Sehgal was operated on using a new technique Pic/Rajeev Tyagi

Sehgal was recently operated on by a team of doctors from RG Stone Urology and Laproscopic Hospital in East of Kailash with the help of a 100 watt Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) machine. According to doctors, this is among the rarest cases as the size of the prostrate was huge. Reason why they have approached the Guiness Book of World Records for the case.

"The normal volume of a prostrate gland is 18gm. We usually operate in cases where the volume of the prostrate is 50-60gm. This is a very rare and unusual case. A 424gm prostrate gland is enormous. We have even contacted the Guiness Book of World Records for a record related to the successful removal of the biggest prostrate gland using this technique," said Dr Manish Singla, senior urologist at the hospital.

Holmium Laser Enucleation of Prostate (HOLEP) is the latest modality used in the management of enlarged prostate. "We used a HoLEP machine and through enucleation, the prostrate was removed. Open surgery isu00a0 more morbid," said Dr Anil Varshney, chief urologist at the south Delhi hospital.
