Cheated off his well-established business by Shalini Verma, the notorious conwoman, this builder now supports himself by driving an auto

If it weren't for Shalini Verma,u00a0 the infamous conwoman, fate would still be smiling upon Tamanna TV, once a successful builder.

A first ranker from the prestigious Regional Engineering College at Suratkal, Tamanna had a construction company that employed over 150 people.

Even after Tamanna TV gave Shalini Verma and her aide close to Rs 5.85 crore to float a new company, they allegedly kidnapped him in 2006.u00a0The report that MiD DAY carried on August 25. Verma cheated several people to the tune of Rs 20 crore.

But after a chance meeting with the now-infamous Verma, he drives an autorickshaw, and can barely afford the Rs 15,000 fee for his 7-year-old son's school admission.

Till 1991, Tamanna's company had built over 10 apartments, and the business was good.u00a0 The following year, he met Verma who had her own granite company called Amar Granites in the city and had supplied granite to Tamanna's company.

Verma was a widow, so a sympathetic Tamanna helped her financially for a few years.

In 2003, Verma met Mohammed Usman, a Mumbai-based contractor, who was wanted in many cheating cases in various towns.

He had come to the city because the police had gotten interested in him, and he was looking for a new venture.u00a0

He offered Verma to join him after he found that she was not doing too well businesswise. After some time, they started living together.

Unknown to Tamanna, the couple had already duped several businessmen before they approached him with a proposal Usman wanted to float a new company, and wanted Tamanna to be the partner.

Not suspecting any foul play, Tamanna gave him close to Rs 3 crore.

To meet his demands, he had to take a loan. In a short period, he had paid the duo close to Rs 5.85 crore. They allegedly kidnapped him in 2006, demanding more money, which Tamanna eventually complied with.

But without warning, Verma and Usman went missing in 2007, leaving Tamanna in the lurch. To pay back the loan, he had to sell all his property, leaving him with nothing. He searched for the duo, but in vain.

On August 24, the Koramangala police arrested Verma, who claimed that she didn't have any money, since she had put it all in her daughter's name. However, the daughter claims that she is not related to Verma.

Tamanna now lives with his friend, and drives a rented autorickshaw. He says that he is hiding from people who had given him loans.

His wife lives with her mother. "Verma took everything away from me. The only thing I can think of is to commit suicide. At one time, I had 150 employees; now I can't even feed myself."
