Taking a step forward in the multi-crore hawala racket and tax evasion scam, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials yesterday raided the bungalow and office of Sunil Shinde, the chartered accountant of Pune-based horse trader Hasan Ali Khan.

A team of more than ten officials of the ED checked various documents and computer data pertaining to Hasan Ali's income tax details. The ED also had to call a computer hardware engineer at Shinde's house for seizure of his computer hard disk.

ED sleuths conducted searches at Shinde's bungalow in Sahakar Nagar and office at Hadapsar for about 10 hours. When the raid took place, Shinde was out of the town. He had gone to Mumbai on Tuesday evening to appear before the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal regarding Hasan Ali's case. When informed about the marathon raid, Shinde rushed to his home around 1.30 pm.

Legal action?
Speaking to media persons after the raid Shinde said, "There were around 10 ED officers who conducted the search operation at my house and office. Since Khan sahib was my client I had his income tax documents from 2001 to 2009.

The ED has seized these documents along with the accounting data. The officials thought I might have kept some documents in my cars. So they carried out search in four cars including two Mercedes.
I am considering the legal options against them as I feel that the raid was ill-conceived."
