If you crave for authentic Parsi cuisine and need your fill of Patra Ni Machchi and Lagan Nu Custard, make a trip to Zamus on DP Road. The sizzler joint now serves Parsi buffets on Sundays, which promises to make your weekends special. For those unfamiliar with Parsi cuisine, this may be a good time to acquaint yourself with the trademark sweet and tangy flavours. Parsi cuisine features a blend of western and eastern influences and has adopted recipes from various countries.
Ambience: The restaurant reminds you of American highway diners that are so frequently depicted in Hollywood movies. The walls are painted in bright violet and yellow and there are red chairs, yellow tables and hanging lamps dotting the room. You can also sit out and enjoy the sights of the busy lane.u00a0
We liked: The buffet priced at Rs 350 includes Mutton Cutlet with Gravy, Chicken Jardalo, Kid Gosht, Roti, Pav, Fish Patia with Dal Chawal and Lagan Nu Custard. Food is served on coconut leaves, starting from the Lagan Nu Achar (pickle) and salad. The pickle is a popular item during feasts and tastes spicy and sweet. The grilled Mutton Cutlet served with red sauce tasted heavenly, thanks to the stuffing made from Mutton Kheema cooked with spices and stuffed in-between an omelet.
The tangy and sweet Jardalo Chicken is named after the dry fruit Jardalo (dried apricot) which is used for cooking this dish. Made from Hunza or Afghani apricots cooked with medium-sized chicken pieces, it is served with a roti and leaves you craving for more.
The Kid Gosht is prepared from baby lamb and tastes sweet. Tender lamb pieces and the white coconut gravy made for a heady combination. At the end of the meal, we were served Fish Patia with Dal Chawal. This traditional dish is flavoured with spices, herbs, palm sugar and tamarind and uses fresh Surmai fish. The attendant served the rice, poured dal and the fish curry. It tastes sweet unlike fish curries in other regional cuisines, which are spicy. The mixture of the three items takes some getting used to but gradually grows on you.
As we were late for the buffet, the Lagan Nu Custard was over and we had to settle for the apricot ice-cream, which was not bad either.
Service: Zamus gets full marks for service. The attendants were polite, knowledgeable and patiently answered all our queries.
