Kumar, a constable in City Armed Reserve (CAR), was dismissed after it was found that he was taking undue leaves because of a supposed accident. Sub-inspector Prakash R of Upparpet police station said, "An enquiry found that Kumar had never met with an accident but had claimed all the benefits." Prakash added that Kumar and his accomplice Manjunath were homosexuals. Kumar was later dismissed from service a year ago. Having retained his identity card, Kumar colluded with friend Manjunath and began robbing gullible people, mostly eunuchs and homosexuals.
Posing as a cop from the jurisdictional Upparpet police station, Kumar would catch 'law breakers' -- in particular eunuchs and homosexuals, and rob their valuables in return for their release. This was to ensure that his victims, who were already doing illegal acts, refrained from filing a complaint with the police. His luck ran out, when one of the victims approached the Upparpet police.
Based on the complaint, a team of police led by Inspector Lokeshwar trapped Nanda Kumar and recovered six mobile phones and other valuables worth Rs 25,000. Nanda Kumar used to share the loot with Manjunath, and spend lavishly on alcohol and prostitutes.
