The 18-year-old son of a former corporator, Nagarathna Nagaraj, allegedly beat up a traffic police sub-inspector late on Monday, all because the 'cops shouted at him and hit him'.

The accused, Bharath, a student of Austin College in Chamarajpet, was caught riding a two-wheeler without a licence and a helmet on Monday at 1.45 pm.

The traffic police confiscated his bike and he was fined, said a police officer. However, when Bharath returned to the police station at night to retrieve his bike, at around 10:45 pm. After a heated argument, he grabbed the officer's collar, and slapped him.

Bharath who was still at the Ashoknagar police station said, "I agree that I hit him. But it happened in the spur of the moment. The officer kept shouting at me and hit me, so I slapped him."

"There was not petrol in my vehicle, and I was taking it for a refill. Even the engine was off. I was caught for riding without helmet."

A complaint has been lodged at the Ashoknagar (Law and Order) police station and Bharath has been booked under IPC 353 for assaulting a cop on duty.
