Classes likely to begin towards end of July; college principals anticipate greater demand for commerce stream

On June 27, students are expected to drop in at their school and then head for the nearest college to pick up an admission form. While admissions to first year junior college went online in Mumbai a couple of years ago, a similar pattern is yet to be implemented in the city. Still, the admissions will take place according to the centralised admission procedure. College principals said going by the experience of the past couple of years, they anticipated the greatest demand would be for commerce stream.
Sunil Magar, deputy director of education, Pune circle, said that students need not go to every college they wish to apply to for picking up forms. "They can pick up any form they wish to and submit it at any college. From June 27, forms will be available and submission will take place within 3-4 days. They need not worry about documentation as only mark-list and school-leaving certificate is required," he said. Asked whether domicile certificates or proof of stay were required as there was great confusion among parents over this, he denied it.
"No, there is no such need. Only those students seeking admission in quotas like reserved categories for castes, or minority or sports or cultural, have to keep relevant documents like caste certificates, or for sports quota, proof of participation at national or state level, et cetera, ready for submission when required," he said.
In the admission forms, students will be asked to give a list of preferences and based on a student's marks as well as the request for the college and stream, admissions will be allotted. While Fergusson College has once again been designated the centre for the centralised admission process, the merit list will be available at all colleges as well as on website of the deputy director, that is www.dydepune.com, for students to go through.
While Magar remained mum on the subject of merit lists and college opening dates, principals said the admission process was likely to go on for 15 days. "After submission of forms, the first merit list should take 8-10 days. We expect the entire admission process to get over and colleges to open for FYJC students by the end of July," said a principal.
Principals said they did not expect a drastic change but maybe a nominal drop in percentages as results were slightly lower. "Maybe the cut-off percentages might be very nominally lower because overall results showed a drop and this was so percentage-wise too. But if students want to make a choice of preferences, then I would say last year's percentages should be a good guide to gauge the chances," said another principal.
Guidance centres have also been opened in various colleges. "On June 22, guidance sessions will take place at Sadhana College in Hadapsar from 10 am to 6 pm, and on June 23 sessions will be held at Modern College in Shivaji Nagar. Whosoever needs guidance on careers, admissions or even help can go to these centres," said Magar.
