Students from the city seem unable to cope with poor performance in examinations in these competitive times, what with two of them committing suicide in Malad yesterday. In the first incident, a 21-year-old girl, Anisha D'souza, SYBCom student from KJ Mittal College, ended her life by jumping off the terrace of her residence, while 17-year-old Yash Shah, a student of Sathaye College, committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence. Both were residents of Malad (West).

Sad but true: After failing in three subjects in SYBCom exam, Anisha D'souza jumped to death from her single storey house in MHADA Colony, Malwani.

According to the Malwani police, D'souza had failed in three subjects in her recently concluded exams. Yesterday afternoon, after collecting her marksheet from the college, she arrived at her house. Observing her parents to be asleep, she ran towards the terrace of her single storey house and jumped to her death. "We recorded the statements of the family members, and found that she was afraid to face her parents after she realised she had failed," said Abdul Shaikh, senior police inspector at Malwani police station.

Cops have registered a case of accidental death, and are investigating whether the parents had scolded her due to which she was scared to face them. "We have sent the girl's body for a post mortem to the Bhagwati Hospital," said Shaikh.

Gone too soon
In the second case, 17-year-old Shah, resident of Spectra building, Nadiadwala Colony in Malad (W), committed suicide by hanging himself in his house. Cops said Shah reportedly took the extreme step as he had been under depression due to his illness. Unable to concentrate on his studies due to jaundice, which was plaguing him before the exams began, he skipped a few exams, and in some he fared badly.

According to the Malad police, who are investigating the case, Shah was a bright student and had scored 97 per cent in his SSC exams. "He was very sensitive towards his academic performance. In the suicide note that he left behind Shah stated that he was upset with his poor performance in his exams, as he was unwell," said an officer from Malad police station. When Shah found out that he failed his exams, he committed suicide by hanging himself at 12.30 yesterday afternoon.u00a0 u00a0u00a0
