Inmate dead, kin accuse Yerawada jail authorities of negligence, file case against them

Vilas Bhandalkar, Sunil's father has filed a case against the authorities of Yerawada jail at the Shastri Nagar police station and does not wish to accept the body without proper clarification.
The entire episode started a week ago when Sunil Bhandalkar was accused of forging signatures in a property related matter and was arrested by the Narayan Peth police. He was locked-up at Faraskhana. Later he was shifted to Yerawada Central Jail.
Bhandalkar was admitted to Sassoon on October 28.Padmaker Bhalerao, superintendent of Yerawada jail, said: "His blood sugar level rose up to 400. That's why he was sent to Sassoon. He died during treatment. A telegram was sent to his family informing about his admission."
Bhandalkar's family said it did not receive any telegram. Deepak, brother-in-law of Sunil, said, "They didn't inform us about anything."
Vilas Bhandalkar, who works as a peon, said it was only on October 31 at 10.30 am that Yerawada authorities informed his family about the death. The hospital report states Bhandalkar died on 28 October.
P S Pawar, superintendent of Sassoon hospital said, "Please contact the police station for post mortem report."
