Rally participant gets a challan for overspeeding

Imagine yourself behind the wheels of a demon with a top speed of 317 km/hr. There are no two ways about it.

Spoke in the wheel: A traffic policeman writing a challan at Vijay Chow in New Delhi (above) and the driver of the Porsche Cayenne paying the fine amount (below)

Any body would be carried away. Literally.

But then there are racetracks and there are city roads where being fast and furious does not mean champagne finishes, but challans by traffic cops.

The first edition of the Super Car show in Delhi on Sunday got a yet-to-be-identified youth into trouble for over-speeding.

The event, in which in one of the most expensive cars on the planet were put on display, was flagged off from Rajesh Pilot Marg.

When a participant reached Vijay Chowk in his Porsche Cayenne, cruising well above the prescribed speed limit, an alert traffic cop intercepted him. "I was waiting for an auto at the India Gate and suddenly a black sport car zoomed past me, and went away even before I could take out my cell phone to click a picture. But I was lucky.

A traffic policeman stopped the car and I got a glimpse of the regal vehicle," said Abhishek, an eyewitness.

The young driver of the shining Porsche got out of his car. But even before he could plead with the cop, the latter handed him a challan.

The driver, who wore a polo t-shirt with Portugal's flag on it, refused to talk to this correspondent. He was fined Rs 1,100.

Even the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) refused to identify the driver, saying "I am yet to locate him."
Hot wheels

Super cars that participated in the show included Ferrari F430, Audi R8, Aston Martin DB9, Lamborghini LP560's, Mercedes SL55, CL500, Maserati GTS, Chevrolet Camaro SS, Bentley GTS, Porsche Carrera S, Porsche 911, BMW M and Z4, Rolls Royce Phantom and Bentley Arnage.

Not only cops but car lovers who came in large numbers to see the beauties caused problems.

Annika Talwar, who drove a Range Rover Sport Supercharged, said: "The drive was smooth except at certain points where two-wheelers came in between. There were people clicking pictures or for trying to take a closer look at the cars."

Arjun Chopra, who drove BMW 650 I, said, "It was just amazing to see Delhi's best cars. We were very excited and the crowd cheered us. It was a first-of-its-kind event in Delhi and we expect to make it an annual affair." Participants drove across most parts of Central Delhi, from Rajesh Pilot Marg to Pragati Maidan, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Chanakyapuri, Shantipath, Prime Minister's house and Aurangzeb Road.
