The stimulus packages announced by the government led to a spurt in auto sales in the country in February 2009, marking growth for the first time in several months.
Domestic vehicle sales jumped 12.66 per cent to 8,36,926 last month compared to 7,42,856 vehicles in February last year, according to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) figures released on Monday.
Passengers car sales led the growth with a 21.8 jump at 1,15,386 units in February 2009 against 94,757 units in the same month last year.
Motorcycle sales in the country during the month were up by 15.6 per cent at 4,91,462 units, against 4,25,089 units in the year-ago period. Total two-wheeler sales in February also went up by 16.2 per cent at 6,30,849 units, against 5,42,757 units in the same month last year.
However, the commercial vehicle segment pulled down the overall growth with 31.7 per cent decrease at 31,069 units, from 45,478 units during the same month last year.
"The financing in the commercial vehicles segment is still not available. But things are happening slowly on that front," SIAM general secretary Dilip Chenoy said.
