Fed up with the drinking habit of his son, 60-year-old Baban Kondiba Pawar killed his 35-year-old son yesterday. Balasaheb, a resident of Renuka Nagar, Vadgaon Budruk on Sinhagad Road, used to harass and curse his father every evening under the influence of liquor. The investigating officers from Haveli police station arrested Pawar and registered a case of murder against him late last night.
Yesterday early morning when the squabble between the two went out of control, Pawar took a sickle and hit Balasaheb on his chest. Balasaheb was rushed to hospital for treatment where he succumbed to his injuries. The post-mortem formalities were completed by afternoon.
Pawar at first refused to accept the crime and instead tried to mislead the police. "With the help of a local leader, Pawar posed that his son committed suicide by hitting himself with a sharp weapon," said PI Ashok Patil, the investigating officer from Haveli police station. "Finally, he confessed to the crime and showed us the hidden sickle smeared with blood near his home."
Pawar, who runs a small pan shop at Vadgaon, said Balasaheb was his only son but had made his life miserable. "He left me no option," he said with tears in his eyes.
The deceased was the former general secretary of District Youth Congress. He had a love marriage with Meena from the same village about a decade ago. He had a son and a daughter. Balasaheb's love of drink made his family separate.
"Meena left him and went to her mother's place in Madhya Pradesh a few months ago because of his fascination for liquor," said Patil.
