When 47-year-old Nisha Bhatia, an officer working with the Research & Analysis Wing (RAW), ran to the terrace of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) building, threatening suicide, a group of lawyers ran after her to stop her. They feared the officer, upset after an unfavourable CAT verdict, would jump to her death.

But they were not aware that Bhatia had tried to commit suicide last year too by consuming a poisonous substance at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). She had consumed poison at being denied entry into the PMO.

Bhatia was then posted in R&AW's training centre at Gurgaon.

On November 26, when the CAT dismissed her petition on a posting, Bhatia, a director level officer with R&AW, launched an abusive tirade against the officers present in the room and the government counsel before threatening to kill herself.

"I was surprised at her reaction. We knew about her foul temper but no one expected she would resort to abusive language during the proceedings. In fact I had to hide in a corner to save myself," said the government counsel, DC Gupta.

But Bhatia didn't stop at abuses. Leaving the room stunned she climbed the terrace of the CAT building but was overpowered by the lawyers. It has been learnt that following the incident, proceedings in the court was suspended for one-and-a-half hour. Though no formal complaint was lodged, the city police was apprised of the incident. Bhatia was unavailable for comments.

"Court officials informed the cops and a few lady constables were rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. For more than an hour every one watched the drama," said Gupta.

Petitions galore

However, this is not the first occasion when courts have dismissed Bhatia's petitions. Last July, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition filed by her. Her petition was also dismissed by the Delhi High Court. And a Metropolitan Court judge dismissed her plea earlier this year. On all occasions she reportedly expressed displeasure at the verdict.

It has been learnt that Bhatia lodged various petitions ranging from postings to harassment at workplace and there are 15 cases filed by her being heard in various city courts, including the Supreme Court, High Court, Dwarka and Patiala House courts.
