Medical university sets up panel to resolve matter of fresh entrance tests for doctors enlisted with Pune varsity for PhD

Two days after the MiD DAY report 'University change may mean fresh entrance for PhD-aspiring docs'u00a0 that appeared on September 13,u00a0 on the ordeal of doctors wishing to complete their PhD from the University of Pune (UoP) having to appear for yet another entrance test set by the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), a committee was set up to resolve their issues.

In keeping with a state government resolution, all doctors enlisted for PhD with universities across the state have been transferred to MUHS. "Since the two universities are very different in essence, the MUHS wanted to screen candidates on its own and re-conduct entrance exams," said a senior professor at UoP. This meant that candidates could be rejected if they did not clear the new entrance tests. This had upset the candidates.

Dr Arun Jamkar, vice-chancellor of MUHS, said that owing to objections by students and media reports, the varsity had discussed the matter before the academic council on Wednesday and come up with a solution.
"A four-member committee of senior members, including Dr Suhas Parchure, Dr Gajanan Ekbote, Dr Girish Dhadphade and Dr Shashank Dalvi, has been constituted to look into this matter. We don't want to upset the students, but want to make sure candidates conform to standards set by the varsity," said Jamkar.
