A fire broke out in the basement of the Asian Heart Institute at Bandra Kurla Complex around 9.30pm yesterday. The fire brigade reached the spot with six fire engines, four water tankers and one breathing apparatus, but they said the fire had already been doused by the automatic sprinkler system. The area was, however, filled with smoke. Fire brigade officials said some clothes kept in the basement caught fire, but what exactly caused the fire is still being investigated.

H. N Mujawar, fire consultant at the hospital, told midday, "Waste cloth kept in the basement caught fire but it was quickly doused after the automatic water sprinklers got activated. We immediately called the fire brigade as per rules. Normally, on duty security guards use the area but thankfully when the fire broke out there was no one there."

Dr. Vijay Desai, medical director of Asian Heart, said, "The fire was minor. We immediately called the fire brigade. There were no casualties and we don't know what caused the fire."

The source said, as a precautionary measure after the fire broke out, patients and staff were immediately provided with air masks and lifts were shut down.
